Indications and Intended Use

Blunt-tip microcannulas are primarily indicated in aesthetic medicine for the safe and precise delivery of soft tissue dermal fillers, such as hyaluronic acid or collagen stimulators, and autologous fat. They are designed to glide around critical blood vessels and nerves rather than slicing through them, which significantly reduces the risk of bruising, swelling and severe vascular complications.

• Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Platelet-Rich Fibrin (PRF)
• Fat grafting and volume augmentation

Choosing the right microcannula depends on the injection depth, the area being treated and the viscosity of the filler:

• Fine gauge 27G–30G: Ideal for delicate areas like tear troughs, fine lines and superficial lip borders.
• Medium gauge 23G–25G: Versatile and suitable for medium-to-thick viscosity fillers, commonly used in nasolabial folds, the mid-face and marionette lines.
• Large gauge 18G–22G: Best for high-viscosity fillers and volume enhancement, such as jawline sculpting, cheeks and body contouring. This product, at 22G x 50mm, sits in this range.

Material Specifications

Microcannulas are constructed from premium, medical-grade stainless steel, primarily 304 or 316L stainless steel for the flexible tubing, and surgical-grade or Inox stainless steel for sharper tips and structural components. These materials are selected for several reasons:

• Corrosion resistance: Medical-grade alloys prevent rusting, even when exposed to bodily fluids or liquid medications.
• Flexibility and strength: Structural integrity to withstand insertion while remaining flexible enough to navigate tissues.
• Biocompatibility: These stainless steel grades are selected for compatibility with the body and the medications and fillers being delivered.
• Surface polishability: The steel can be highly polished or coated to minimize friction and facilitate smooth insertion.

Sterility

Packaged and sterilized in the USA using gamma sterilization.

Gamma sterilization is a highly penetrating, cold sterilization method that exposes packaged products to ionizing radiation from a Cobalt-60 source. It destroys microorganisms by breaking their DNA bonds without using heat or leaving chemical residues, supporting long shelf-life sterility for pre-packaged medical devices.

Microcannulas offer an alternative to sharp needles for dermal filler injections. Because they feature a blunt tip, they are designed to glide between tissues and push blood vessels aside.

1. Skin preparation: Disinfect the treatment area and administer numbing cream if desired.
2. Create a pilot hole: Use a standard sharp dermal needle, slightly larger in gauge than the chosen microcannula, to create a small entry point through the dermis.
3. Cannula insertion: Insert the blunt-tipped microcannula into the pilot hole at a 60–90 degree angle. Once the proper depth is reached, gently maneuver the flexible cannula tangentially into the appropriate treatment plane.
4. Injection: Inject the product in a retrograde fashion while withdrawing the cannula, using an appropriate technique to support even distribution.
5. Aftercare: Carefully remove the cannula and follow the applicable product and treatment aftercare protocol.

Microcannulas can reduce certain risks compared with sharp needles, but they are not risk-free. They are contraindicated for direct vascular, medullar or nerve injection and must not be used at sites with active infection.

Key Contraindications

• Active skin conditions: Any active infection, rash, open lesion or severe acne at or near the planned entry site.
• Bleeding or clotting disorders: Patients with bleeding disorders or those receiving anticoagulant therapy require appropriate medical assessment.
• Hypersensitivity: Known allergies or hypersensitivity to device materials or any locally administered anesthetics.
• Systemic health issues: Relevant uncontrolled systemic disease, severe allergies, history of anaphylaxis or active immunosuppressive therapy requires appropriate clinical assessment.
• Pregnancy and breastfeeding: Elective aesthetic injections are generally avoided during these periods.

Crucial Warnings and Safety Risks

• Vascular occlusion: Blunt-tipped cannulas can still puncture vessels or contribute to vascular occlusion. Potential complications can include tissue necrosis, stroke or blindness. High-risk anatomical areas require extreme caution.
• Device sizing matters: Fine microcannulas may be more capable of entering or puncturing vessels and require particular caution in high-risk areas.
• Technique and anatomy: Appropriate injection-plane selection, anatomical knowledge and controlled injection pressure are essential.
• Sterility: Microcannulas are sterile, single-use devices. Do not reuse, reprocess or resterilize them.
